Do not leave any cardboard boxes such as food boxes, in the open. It should be kept above ground level. Cockroaches may lay eggs within them. Trash containers and sink strainers should be emptied and filled garbage containers must be removed immediately in your home. If you have pets, clean always after feeding them. All food products should be resealed after opening stored them and placed in the refrigerator.

Eliminating of extra trash is also a must to get rid of cockroaches. Tighten any loose pipes, and patch plumbing leaks in the bathroom areas. Eliminate water sources by means of drying out sinks and bathtubs. Empty any pet water dishes. Tight fitting lids or screens in aquariums.  The elimination of harborages or clutter is also important in controlling infestations. Remove clutter, debris and trash around your house. Fill any tree holes with cement to control cockroach harborage.

Another way to get rid of those cockroaches is spreading diatomaceous earth in areas where roaches lay their eggs. Some roaches are killed within two weeks of treatment so don’t be surprised if you see roaches after application. Baits with insect growth regulator can prevent the growth of cockroaches.

Use of trap is a non-chemical attack to eliminate cockroach infestation. Use sticky traps instead of spraying insecticides for cockroaches. Catnip has nepetalactone which is a natural repellent that can be used in homes to control roaches. If insecticide and catnip are not available, you can use soapy water to kill them. An alternative to this treatment is a combination of one or two pieces of bread and beer and place the mixture to the congested area. You can also use boric acid on top of the kitchen cabinets. Cockroaches will bring it to their nests, killing all of them through stomach poisoning.

Another method to control cockroaches is to use other insects and animals who feed on cockroaches like spiders and lizards (gecko).

If you can’t kill the cockroaches by yourself, you can call an exterminator. Remember that exterminators can be fairly pricey.
